Competition is built into the laws of nature. It is the guide of evolution and progress. Organisms and animals compete for food, trees compete for water and sunlight, businesses compete for customers, men and women compete for sexual partners, athletes compete to win. Competition is good. It causes you to perform at your highest level.
Think about any major sport. If you go watch old video footage they look like division 3 college teams! The game looks so primitive compared to where it’s at today. Competition drives the evolution of everything. Especially at the human level. It causes us to always be making things and ourselves better.
On the other hand, without competition you will remain stagnant. Think about the example of marriage. Why does every marriage reach dry points and staleness? Because there is no longer any need to compete for his or her attention. We’ve already achieved the goal. Winning that person. In order to keep that marriage strong it takes hard work.
Since competition is such a powerful progress tool, how can we use competition to drive personal growth? How can we use competition to build and break habits? To become more disciplined? This is what we need to figure out. The answer could lead to insane personal growth gains.
