Life on the fringe is risky. Like a pioneer entering an unknown land. Not knowing who or what they might encounter. Why take that risk when you can stay where it's safe? Where it's comfortable and secure.
Most of us are scared of the fringe. Afraid of being outside mainstream culture. So, instead of embracing the adventures that present themselves and opening up our minds to new and different ideas, we stay where we've been raised. We follow the footsteps of our mothers and fathers. The social groups and traditions we've been a part of our whole lives. We assume it's the best place to be because it's safe. It's easy.
But, the fringe is where real growth happens. The fringe is where we're introduced to different ideas and new ways of thinking. It's where innovation and progress exist.
Sure, it's scary. We'll be ostracized by the mainstream. Laughed at for being weird or unique. But, new friends will come. And, eventually we'll realize that it doesn't really matter what the haters think. What we're doing just isn't for them. They don't realize that today's fringe becomes tomorrow's mainstream. Until a whole new generation of cultural pioneers find a new path to the fringe.
